A server is simply a computer that delivers information and software to other computers that are linked to it by a network, providing centralized data management, effective backup features, more processing power and additional storage. Utilizing a fast, well-equipped server preinstalled with Microsoft's Windows® Small Business Server 2008 software means setting up your new server network is a fast and easy process.
What is a Server?
A server is simply a specialized computer that delivers information to other computers that are linked to it either through cables or wirelessly through a router. It provides centralized data management and file sharing, shared resources such as fax machines and printers, effective backup features such as automated client backup, remote access to files and applications, and increased data security through firewalls, data backup, user access licenses, and software updates. A server is different from a basic desktop computer because it is built to handle heavier workloads, more applications and utilizes server specific hardware to increase productivity and reduce downtime.

Server Software
Since a server must supply a range of services to many users, the requirements of its operating system and application software differ from those of a desktop computer. Therefore, server-specific software is better able to run the numerous applications required to process data from multiple clients, thereby ensuring information flows freely within your office network or to remote locations and reducing bottlenecks. Additionally, server-specific software may also include secure application sharing, as well as e-mail, Internet connectivity, data backup functionality, office equipment (printers, fax machines, etc.) access and other important productivity features. Panda Technology recommends Windows Small Business Server 2008 operating system for your first server purchase. When you get down to options for SBS 2008, You have the option to purchase it two ways.
Factory Installed:
Factory installed is exactly how it sounds, it’s pre-installed at the factory before the server is shipped to your office. There are many benefits to factory installation of your software, including being less expensive than purchasing at retail, and faster, easier out-of-the-box setup. Once your hardware has been set up, simply turn your server on — it will boot up and you will be presented with a Microsoft Server software license agreement page and you can begin the setup wizard immediately.

Retail Edition:
If you choose not to purchase software at the time of your server purchase, forgot to purchase the software you needed, or you want to take the time to install it yourself, you can also choose to purchase the retail edition. The retail edition will come separate from the server either by mail or email. You then need to install or download the software onto your server. Server Hardware
A server comes with enhanced hardware features such as multi-core processors, faster RAM options for optimal application performance, multiple hard drives for increased data capacity and redundancy, and a multitude of additional features. You will have a few form factor options when selecting a server: Tower, Rack, or Blade (insert link to pdf on form factors). A tower server is most typical and recommended for your first server. In addition to form factor, you will also have to choose how many hard drives and how many processors. For an office with less than 25 employees, a server with one processor and 2-4 hard drives should be sufficient. If you have more than 25 employees or if you're planning to run data intensive applications, a server with two processors and 4-6 hard drives is recommended.
